What Does Fluoride Treatment Do?

Fluoride is a mineral that's naturally present in many foods and water. It has many benefits, but it is especially effective in strengthening teeth and preventing tooth decay.

If you have a history of cavities, chronic dry mouth, deep pits, fissures, or exposed root surfaces, or you have a child who's a patient at our office, we may recommend fluoride treatment.

Fluoride treatment is often given to children at their biannual dentist appointments to help their teeth grow strong and to protect their smiles from cavities. If you are looking for fluoride treatment in Fountain Hills, Arizona for you or your child, please call (480) 837-2000 to schedule an appointment!

Is Fluoride Good for You?

Fluoride intake is most critical for infants and children between the ages of six months and 16 years because this is the period when "baby teeth" fall out and are replaced with permanent teeth. However, fluoride is also important in adults to prevent tooth decay and further strengthen teeth.

Many people have a fluoride deficiency, which puts teeth at a greater risk for cavities. Fluoride treatment can help strengthen your teeth and help you combat cavities. You can also get fluoride naturally from tap water, mouth rinses, and by using toothpaste that contains fluoride.

Fluoride Treatment FAQs

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay through remineralization, making your teeth's enamel stronger and more resistant to acids. It also decreases the risk of cavities while keeping harmful bacteria production to a minimum.
The actual treatment of fluoride involves allowing the fluoride to absorb into the enamel for several hours before being brushed away during daily oral hygiene practices. Once absorbed, fluoride can protect teeth for a few months before needing another treatment.
To protect the enamel on your teeth, you should get fluoride treatment a few times a year. Talk with your dentist to learn the number of treatments you may need based on your oral health needs.
During fluoride treatment, your dentist will apply a fluoride gel, varnish, or foam to your teeth either by painting it on or having you wear a mouth guard with the solution in it for a few minutes.
You should wait, at a minimum, 30 minutes after your fluoride treatment to eat and drink.
